I think my favorite part about living off-grid is the absolute control over utilities. We can control how much power we’d like to use each day, how much water and how much gas. Living on-grid, the best we could do was turning off lights or unplugging non-essential items. We start to realize what we really need and use.
We’ve discovered as a family of 4, we need 460 gallons of water a month (laundry, toilets, hand washing, bathing, dishes, cooking, drinking, watering plants, pets, etc).
The average person uses 80-100 gallons of water A DAY. 😳 That’s 320-400 gallons A DAY for a family of 4—not far off from what we have learned to use in a month. It’s been almost 200 days in total our family has lived off-grid and it’s amazing how drastically our mindset has changed with utilities and also so many other areas as well.
Its fascinating how simple it truly is to change a humans perspective of “normal”. 🤔
What is something “normal” to you most wouldn’t find normal at all? 👇🏼

We didnt live off grid but we full timed in an RV for 3 years and soon to go back. Learned just how little we actually need of items/clothes ect. We have a house full of stuff but we really dont need any of it besides basics- Rachel McCash Cronin Tealah Lovett yes!! I used to shower daily until living off grid. I now take a bath about every 3-4 days if I’m not working outside. If I’ve done an outside project then I definitely bathe that same day haha
- Cheresa Wynn Rachel McCash Cronin I have to shower daily. There’s no way.
- Active NowTibeca Yao I’d love to hear your tips for saving water and electricity
- Rachel McCash Cronin Tibeca Yao I think toilets is our biggest water saver. We usually try to flush using 8 oz of water or less. Sometimes we can flush using no water! Only 💩 gets 16 oz or even more if needed. Washing dishes, I have the water off while scrubbing and rinse …See More
- Active NowTibeca Yao We give our cats the half drunk cups of water. They don’t mind. 😆
I’ll have to see what else of these we can realistically incorporate based on our location.
