Captains Log: Gritty to City
It’s so loud!!! We’ve been back on grid for about 2.5 weeks and I can hardly believe how loud everything is. The HVAC system. The dishwasher. The laundry. The buzzing of lightbulbs—everything is so incredibly loud. It’s an immediate difference and I already miss the silence of the forest.
It took a few trips to get everything down to the apartment from the trailer but it’s all routine. This is now my 51st move.
I start on laundry and it takes 8-10 loads to get it all done. I packed our dirty dishes too and they go straight to the dishwasher. It’s incredible that I’m multitasking again! Doing laundry and dishes at the same time?!?! I mean, WTF. What else is possible?
In washing my hands and the pots and pans, I find myself shutting off the water in between scrubbing. And then I realize, my gosh, I don’t have to conserve this extremely. But maybe I should? It’s still a great habit I guess.
Our movers arrive 2 weeks after our first arrival and start bringing everything out of storage. It is surreal and so helpful. The military truly knows how to move! We got all our stuff transferred in about 5 hours. 11,000 pounds of stuff transferred in 5 hours!!! Incredible.
I settled our entire apartment in one day—beds made, pictures hung, rugs down, Christmas tree up, toys organized, clothes put away, etc—all in one day. Because, well, why not? Why drag out the move in process when you can do it in a day?
Since moving on grid, I’ve found myself more productive and lazy at the same time. It’s a strange feeling. I’m getting more done with less effort. I’m more creative than ever. I’m working 5 hours a day on my school again instead of it being an idea in my head. I’m networking with incredible people to launch my business in full force again-instead of juggling to survive. I’m visiting the land and planning our build more thoughtfully. Everything is so much easier. When you are used to the generator being in control, it’s a new world when you are in control again.
During this transition, Todd’s has transitioned the trailer into his new work from home office. All is working out! It’s just about being willing to do whatever it takes to achieve your goals. ✨

- Susan Kemer Wait, so you are in an apartment, and not the trailer?
- Rachel McCash Cronin Susan Kemer yes!! We recently moved to an apartment! One thing we didn’t plan for was being in the trailer all day. It’s too cold to be outside, so the only place we could be was on our beds. No running, no playing, just sitting on our beds. Also now t…See More
