Slow down, you get in a hurry at times and it stirs up heavy breathing and makes us feel like you are going to gasp for air. Good style, great looking surroundings and outfit. Like the knowledge share, maybe a walk through the compound like a tour guide for another episode. (I expect more.)

Okay we wanted to do this whole thing originally because we wanted more land. We were suburban homesteaders with chickens and a garden on a tiny lot. We went land shopping just “for fun” because “one day” we wanted more land. I found this 35 acre lot online and wanted to check it out for the experience of looking at a mountain property and needless to say, this lot changed everything. We loved it and turned our lives upside down to grab it and dramatically change our lifestyle to make it work. 💁🏻‍♀️

  • Handlebar Henry  · 0:00Jane and I experienced some of the things you are having ..this was way back in 1976. I think I’ve mentioned that about a month after we got married we were able to live in a 9000 sq foot house..PLUS a huge three car garage and and a work area behind it..hard to explain but would cost a fortune if built today. In addition there was a servants house and even a house for the water well. A pecan orchard..was an unbelievable experience. But we were responsible for everything..the power, water natural gas and so on. The house was built with solid select heart pine..which doesn’t exist anymore. These were virgin trees that were cut ..they were something like the redwoods in California..not quite as large and many of these were actually hauled out of the woods using a Lindsey 8 Wheel Lumber Wagon (my grandfather ended up owning the Lindsey 8 Wheel Lumber Wagon Factory..it was a bit famous as an important Mississippi invention: https://www.google.com/search?source=univ&tbm=isch… Anyway.. when we first got married we didn’t have a lot of money so it was like a dream come true..to live in such a place..and not have anyone bothering us about it..we were there for 5 years..as sort housekeepers. The house was SOLID HEART PINE..in todays world just the lumber would be enough to build a small subdivision. Anyway..one thing I learned is that if I ever ended up being wealthy enough to actually own a house like this I would never do it..because it was an enormous amount of work. Always something to do. In fact..so much work that the guy across the highway actually spent and entire year just painting the outside of it. There were a number of similar things that we experienced that you are dealing with. one was water. The original owners had put in a very expensive and deep well..as I mentioned there was even a small house to protect it. Well..one day the well ran dry. Now originally this had been a free flowing spring but as the modern world started moving out in what had been out in the country..the water level dropped. So I had to get a guy to come out and drop the pipe..which meant he had to putt it all out and extend the end. It wasn’t as big a job as it might sound..but I learned early on about just how valuable water is..how it’s absolutely necessary. This was just one of the bumps on the road but I must say our experience was just amazing. We would live on one side of the house..then move over to the other side..the place also had a giant fireplace and one the other side a fireplace for the bedroom. And enormous porch on the front and back (this isn’t included in the sq footage of the house). The kitchen was something like you might see at a restaurant..very spacious and modern for it’s day. To make a comparison with the house we left..we were renting it for $100 a month! So quite a change for a young couple just married. Sorry for the rambling..I will add one more thing..we finally had a party..a party to end all a parties..was probably in the latter part of the fourth year or early in the 5th..on New Years Eve. It was something that ended up being a little legendary among people that were there..one couple met and got married later on..three kids. I would describe it like this..it was like The Great Gatsby..on a budget. We actually were using a Christmas tree that had been thrown out. Haha..that still makes me laugh. I’ve noticed that you’ve dealt with the cold weather..we would have this too..I actually cut all of the wood we used and used trees that were on the property. Was a lot of wood. And we did have a natural gas floor furnace. I recall that I had to light it each day..the thermo couple (sp) was bad an I was too cheap to replace it..worked well enough for us. Anyway..we didn’t have cable..just an antenna and it worked but not well. Reading about your exploits just reminds me of our time way back then. Our lives would change profoundly over the years..and we have been extremely fortunate in so many ways..financial as well as others..but I did get a good education on how much work it takes to do something like what you are doing.
